How Much Does It Cost to Retile a Shower? A Berkshire Homeowner's Guide

Retiling a shower is one of those jobs that sounds simple until you start pricing it up. The answer to "how much will it cost" depends on far more than just tiles, and knowing what goes into the price helps you budget properly and spot a quote that's missing something important.

Here's a realistic breakdown for homeowners in Reading, Windsor, Wokingham, Maidenhead, Bracknell and the surrounding Berkshire area.

## The short answer

For a standard shower enclosure in an average UK bathroom, retiling typically costs somewhere between £1,200 and £3,500, fully fitted. Where you land in that range depends on the size of the area, the tile choice, and what's found once the old tiles come off.

## What actually makes up the cost

**Strip-out and preparation**
Before new tiles go up, the old ones have to come off, along with any old adhesive, grout, and often a layer of tanking or waterproofing that's failed. This stage usually accounts for a few hundred pounds of the total, more if the tiler finds damp, rot, or damaged plasterboard behind the old tiling, which is common in showers that have been leaking slowly for years without anyone noticing.

**Waterproofing (tanking)**
This is the part that's easy to skip and expensive to regret. Proper tanking of a shower area, particularly around the tray or floor, is what stops water getting into the wall and floor structure. It typically adds £200 to £500 to the job, and it's not an area worth cutting corners on.

**Tiles**
This is where the range widens the most. Budget ceramic tiles might cost £15 to £25 per square metre, mid-range porcelain £30 to £60 per square metre, and larger format or natural stone tiles can run well beyond £100 per square metre. A typical shower enclosure needs somewhere between 4 and 8 square metres of tiling depending on height and layout.

**Labour**
Tiling labour in Berkshire typically runs £40 to £60 per square metre for straightforward layouts, more for large format tiles, intricate patterns, or natural stone, which require more careful handling and cutting.

**Grout, sealant and finishing**
Grout, silicone sealant around the tray and corners, and any trim or edging pieces add a smaller but necessary amount to the total, usually £100 to £250 depending on the finish.

## What can push the price up

- Damp or damage behind the old tiles. If the plasterboard or plaster underneath has deteriorated, it needs replacing before new tiles go up, and this is the most common reason a quote changes once work starts.
- Large format or natural stone tiles. These take longer to cut and lay accurately, and cost more per square metre to buy.
- Underfloor heating. If you're adding it as part of the job, this is an additional cost on top of standard retiling.
- Access and layout. An awkward enclosure shape, a lot of internal corners, or a niche shelf built into the wall all add labour time.

## What can keep the price down

- Sticking to a standard rectangular enclosure rather than a bespoke shape
- Choosing mid-range porcelain rather than natural stone or large format tiles
- Having the strip-out reveal no hidden damp or damage, which is largely down to luck with how well the previous tiling was done

## A word of caution on cheap quotes

If a quote for retiling a shower comes in noticeably lower than others, it's worth asking specifically whether tanking is included. Skipping proper waterproofing is one of the easiest ways to bring a price down, and one of the most expensive things to fix later if water gets into the wall or floor structure.

## Getting an accurate price for your shower

Every shower is different, and the only way to get a genuinely accurate cost is to have someone look at the existing tiling, the size of the space, and the condition of what's underneath.
